Overview of the LDS Teaching

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), commonly referred to as the Mormon Church, teaches a doctrine of pre-mortal existence, wherein all human beings are said to have lived as spirit children of God prior to being born on earth. Within this theological framework, some LDS leaders—most notably Brigham Young—promoted the teaching that Adam was Michael the Archangel before coming to earth in a physical body.

This teaching is often associated with what has come to be known as the Adam–God doctrine, though modern LDS authorities have distanced themselves from this view. Nevertheless, the claim that Adam and Michael are the same being still lingers in some Mormon teachings and traditions. It is typically interpreted through a lens that sees Genesis 2:7 as describing not the creation of a new being from the dust of the earth, but rather the embodiment of a preexistent divine or semi-divine spirit (Lindbloom, 2014).

Examining Genesis 2:7 in Context

This verse describes the origin of Adam in precise terms: God formed him from the dust of the ground, breathed into him the breath of life, and only then did Adam become a living soul. The Hebrew construction here is clear: Adam’s life and existence as a human being began at this moment. There is no biblical support for the notion that Adam existed in a conscious, spiritual form prior to this event.

The language of Scripture does not describe an existing being inhabiting a physical body but portrays an act of divine creation—from nothing. This is consistent with the broader biblical narrative in which God alone is eternal, and all other beings—human and angelic—are created by Him and do not possess eternal preexistence.

Was Adam Michael the Archangel?

There is no biblical evidence whatsoever to suggest that Adam and Michael the Archangel are the same person or being. In fact, the Bible always treats them as entirely distinct:

1. Michael is Clearly Identified as an Angelic Being

Jude 1:9: “Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses…”

Daniel 10:13: “But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me…”

Revelation 12:7: “And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels.”

Michael is presented as a heavenly, angelic warrior, serving in the spiritual realm, leading God’s angelic host against the forces of darkness. He is not human, nor does Scripture give any indication that he ever became human. Hebrews 1:14 confirms the separate nature of angels: “Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?”

Angels are spirit beings, not incarnate beings. Nowhere does the Bible suggest that angels can become human beings or vice versa.

2. Adam Was the First Man, not an Angelic Being

1 Corinthians 15:45: “And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.”

Paul explicitly calls Adam “the first man,” indicating the beginning of human existence. If Adam were Michael, a preexistent angel, he could not rightly be called “the first man.” Furthermore, Adam was made a living soul, not a being who assumed a physical body—he was created body and soul by God.

This verse also contrasts Adam with Christ—the “last Adam”—who is described as a quickening spirit, highlighting their distinct roles. Christ, not Adam, is the one who brings life to fallen humanity. Any teaching that exalts Adam beyond what Scripture declares detracts from the supremacy of Christ.

Does the Bible Teach Preexistence of Human Souls?

No. The concept of preexistence of souls is foreign to Scripture and arises from pagan philosophies such as Platonism, not biblical revelation. The Bible consistently affirms that God is the Creator of each human soul at the point of physical conception or formation in the womb:

Zechariah 12:1: “…the Lord, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.”

Psalm 139:13–14: “For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made…”

God forms the spirit within the person—He does not implant preexistent souls into physical bodies. Human beings are uniquely created by God for this life; they do not come from a premortal realm.

The Uniqueness of Christ’s Incarnation

Another significant problem with the LDS teaching is that it blurs the line between humanity and divinity in a way that undermines the unique role of Jesus Christ. According to Scripture, only one Person existed prior to His human birth: the eternal Son of God, Jesus Christ.

John 1:14: “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us…”

Jesus is unique because He was with God and was God from the beginning (John 1:1), and He alone became flesh for the purpose of redemption. To teach that Adam also preexisted and was divine-like introduces a serious theological error that diminishes the glory of Christ and leads to polytheism, a hallmark of Mormon doctrine but a denial of biblical monotheism.

A Clear Refutation from Scripture

The teaching that Adam was Michael the Archangel and that he preexisted his earthly life is completely unbiblical. It is built upon extra-biblical revelation, subjective interpretation, and flawed theological assumptions.

The Bible plainly teaches:

  • Adam was created from the dust and became a living soul (Genesis 2:7).
  • Adam was the first human being, not a former angel (1 Corinthians 15:45).
  • Michael is an archangel, a ministering spirit distinct from mankind (Jude 1:9; Daniel 10:13).
  • Human souls are not preexistent but formed by God (Zechariah 12:1).
  • Only Jesus Christ preexisted and became incarnate for our salvation (John 1:14).

Thus, we are warned to reject teachings not grounded in the Word of God:

Isaiah 8:20: “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.”

Galatians 1:8: “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.”
