“And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life” (Genesis 3:14).
The first curse spoken in Scripture is not aimed at Adam or Eve. It falls upon the serpent. Before God ever speaks judgment on humanity, He pronounces judgment on their deceiver. This simple truth reveals something profoundly hopeful: God confronts evil before He confronts us. His justice moves first toward the one who sought our ruin.
The serpent’s new posture—lowered to the dust—becomes a permanent picture of Satan’s destiny. Evil may whisper, tempt, and accuse, but it does so from the dust, not from a throne. Genesis wants you to know that sin will always bring you lower and that Satan cannot lift himself higher. God has decreed his humiliation.
And yet, the serpent’s humiliation is also meant to comfort you. The enemy who deceives you is already defeated. The One who cursed the serpent is the same One who promises to crush his head. This is why Christ came: to do what Adam could not, to undo what the serpent unleashed, and to rescue those who have fallen under the serpent’s lies.
If you don’t already know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, this passage speaks directly to you. It reminds you that sin is real, the enemy is real, and judgment is real, but it also announces that salvation is real. Christ entered the world to bear your sin, break the serpent’s power, and bring you into the life of God. The serpent offers deception; Jesus offers truth. The serpent leads to death; Jesus leads to life.
You stand today at a crossroads:
- Will you remain under the serpent’s lie?
- Or will you step into the light of Christ’s victory?
Turn to Him. Call on His name. Trust His finished work on the cross. The Savior who crushed the serpent’s head will also crush the power of sin in your life and make you new.
And if you already belong to Him, walk today with confidence. The serpent still moves, but only in the dust. Christ is your King, your Redeemer, and your Defender. The God who judged the serpent will keep you to the end.
