Genesis 1:1-30 records the creation of the world by God in six days, demonstrating His sovereign power, divine order, and intentional design.

  1. Day 1: God creates the heavens and the earth. At first, the earth is formless and void, covered in darkness. God speaks, “Let there be light,” and light appears. He separates light from darkness, calling them Day and Night (Genesis 1:1-5).
  2. Day 2: God creates the firmament (sky) to divide the waters above from the waters below. He names the firmament Heaven, establishing the expanse of the sky (Genesis 1:6-8).
  3. Day 3: God gathers the waters together, forming the seas, and causes dry land to appear, which He calls Earth. He then commands the earth to bring forth vegetation—grass, herbs, and fruit trees, each yielding seed after its kind (Genesis 1:9-13).
  4. Day 4: God creates the sun, moon, and stars to give light upon the earth. They are also appointed to serve as signs for seasons, days, and years, establishing order and time (Genesis 1:14-19).
  5. Day 5: God creates all sea creatures—from great whales to the smallest fish—and every winged bird, blessing them to be fruitful and multiply (Genesis 1:20-23).
  6. Day 6 (First Part): God creates land animals, including cattle, creeping things, and beasts of the earth, each according to its kind (Genesis 1:24-25).
  7. Day 6 (Second Part): As the pinnacle of creation, God creates man in His own image, both male and female, granting them dominion over all living things. He commands them to be fruitful, multiply, and replenish the earth. God also provides every green herb and fruit-bearing tree for food, ensuring provision for mankind and all creatures (Genesis 1:26-30).

Now we come to Genesis 1:31, which marks the culmination of the sixth day of creation, as God surveys all that He has made and declares it “very good.” Unlike the previous days, where He pronounced His work “good,” this final declaration signifies the completion, perfection, and harmony of His creation. At this moment, there is no sin, no suffering, and no death—only the flawless beauty of God’s handiwork. This verse not only magnifies the splendor of God’s creation but also sets the stage for Genesis 2, where He sanctifies the seventh day as a day of rest, establishing a divine pattern for humanity.
