In a world increasingly dominated by scientific explanations and evolutionary theories, it is crucial for Christians to anchor their understanding of creation in the unwavering truth of God’s Word. There is a growing trend among some Christians to attempt to harmonize the biblical account of creation with evolutionary theory. However, this endeavor is both theologically dangerous and unnecessary. As Davis points out, some have argued that the phrase “let the earth bring forth” in Genesis suggests that God permitted evolutionary processes to take place. Yet, even a cursory comparison between the order of events in Genesis and the claims of evolutionary theory reveals a deep contradiction (Paradise to Prison, 1975, pp. 62-63).

Evolutionary theory posits that marine organisms appeared first, eventually evolving into plants and other forms of life. This directly contradicts the Genesis account, where plants are created on the third day, followed by marine life on the fifth day. Attempting to reconcile these two accounts leads to doctrinal error. Evolutionary theory promotes a worldview that not only misrepresents the order of creation but also distorts the nature of God’s perfect work.

One particularly concerning error that arises from trying to blend evolution with Scripture is the introduction of suffering and death before the fall of man. Evolution by its very nature requires death, struggle, and competition for survival over millions of years. If we accept this, we are forced to believe that suffering and death were part of God’s original “very good” creation. But this idea is incompatible with the Bible. Scripture is clear that death entered the world as a result of sin (Romans 5:12). Before Adam and Eve’s fall, the world was free from death and suffering. These came as a direct consequence of their disobedience.

The theological implications of accepting evolutionary theory are troubling. If death and suffering existed before the fall, then sin is no longer the cause of death, which undermines the core of the Gospel. The entire narrative of redemption rests on the fact that Christ came to defeat sin and death, which entered the world through Adam. To introduce death prior to sin disrupts the foundational truths of Christianity.

Additionally, the idea that man’s limited understanding of the universe is capable of fully grasping the intricacies of creation is deeply flawed. Aside from God’s revelation in the Bible, we have no firsthand witness to the creation of the universe. While science can offer insights into the natural world, it is inherently limited. Scientific theories about the origins of life, such as evolution, are based on assumptions that cannot be fully proven. They are speculative, based on indirect evidence, and are often subject to revision as new discoveries are made.

Furthermore, these scientific theories are not testable or reproducible in the same way that laboratory experiments are. No one was present to observe the supposed evolutionary processes that allegedly shaped life over millions of years. Because of this, much of evolutionary theory remains conjecture rather than settled fact. It is important to remember that science is a tool of discovery, not an ultimate authority on truth.

God’s Word, on the other hand, is eternal and unchanging. Psalm 119:89 declares, “For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven.” Christians should place their trust in the timeless and divinely inspired truth of Scripture, not in the ever-changing theories of man.

When we begin to question the literal account of creation as recorded in Genesis, we open the door to doubting other core doctrines of the Christian faith. If the Bible cannot be trusted in its account of creation, how can we trust it when it speaks of salvation, the nature of God, or the resurrection of Christ? The authority of Scripture must remain paramount in all matters of faith and doctrine.

Attempting to harmonize the biblical account of creation with evolutionary theory is both theologically and logically flawed. Such efforts inevitably lead to a dilution of the truth of God’s Word and can result in serious doctrinal errors. Rather than leaning on the ever-changing and limited understanding of man, we should trust in the time-tested truthfulness of the Bible. God’s Word is clear: He created the world in six days, and His creation was perfect, free from death and suffering, until mankind’s fall into sin. Let us hold fast to this truth and resist the temptation to conform to the speculative theories of modern science.
